Catch the Trains in Old Sacramento! Every weekend April through September, steam-powered excursion trains depart on-the-hour from the Central Pacific Railroad Freight Depot in Old Sacramento (located just two blocks south of the Railroad Museum on Front Street, between "J" and "K" Streets). For the 2009 operating season, regular excursion train tickets are $8 adults, $3 youths ages 6-17, children ages 5 and under ride free. (PLEASE NOTE: Ticket prices for special "theme trains" may be higher.)
Trains operate on a 40-minute, six-mile roundtrip route atop the levees of the Sacramento River. At the end of the line, the authentic steam locomotive "cuts off" the passenger cars and "runs around" the train, coupling onto the other end for the trip back to Old Sacramento. Friendly car attendants are always available for you to ask questions. It's a trip that families of all ages will enjoy!
The train offers your choice of comfortable, enclosed coaches with cushioned seats, or open-air gondolas with wood bench seating and an unobstructed view. Restrooms are not available on the train, so please plan your trip accordingly. Arrive at least 20 minutes early so you'll have time to purchase tickets before your train departs!
Special Trains
Throughout the year, special trains and other opportunities are available for your riding pleasure! For a complete listing of Special Events and Train Rides at the California State Railroad Museum (including special "theme trains" in October, November, and December), please visit our Calendar of Events.
Accessibility The excursion trains of the Sacramento Southern Railroad are not fully accessible to persons with disabilities, due to historic, limited doorway widths and steep stepwells. However, our train crews are always pleased to lend assistance when boarding and alighting from the train (provided wheelchairs or other oversize assistive devices are not required during the trip). Please notify the Train Crew upon your arrival, so we may best meet your needs.
Children and Strollers Children ages 5 and under ride free on the Sacramento Southern Railroad. However, during busy times, we request that "free riders" be placed on their parents' laps so adequate seating is available to all. As aisles are narrow and steps steep, strollers are not allowed aboard the train. A designated "stroller zone" is available near the Ticket Office so that you may pick up your stroller immediately upon the train's return.
Ride Free All Year Museum Members enjoy free regular excursion train rides and Museum admission year-round! For more information, visit the Membership section of our Web site.
