Sacramento's Amtrak train station is located immediately adjacent to Old Sacramento and the California State Railroad Museum. Actual walking distance between the Sacramento train station and Old Sacramento is the equivalent of about two city blocks. However, please be advised that the easiest route does not involve any major city streets. Instead, as you exit from your train or bus, look for the large, green Interstate Highway bridge overhead (to the west of the train station). Walk towards the bridge, and look for the "Old Sacramento" banners. A striped walkway leads directly from the Amtrak passenger platforms, west under the highway bridge, through a parking lot, to Old Sacramento and the California State Railroad Museum. More About Amtrak For guests traveling from the San Francisco Bay Area (including San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco, Martinez, and Fairfield), Amtrak's Capitol Corridor trains offer a convenient and relaxing alternative to highway travel, with frequent daily departures (9 each way as of May 2001) and plenty of scenery along the way. For guests traveling from Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, and other Central Valley points, Amtrak's San Joaquins also offer frequent and convenient train service (with connecting Amtrak Thruway bus service from Stockton to Sacramento on most schedules). Amtrak long-distance trains that stop in Sacramento include the Coast Starlight (Los Angeles-Santa Barbara-Oakland-Portland-Seattle) and the California Zephyr (Oakland-Reno-Salt Lake City-Denver-Chicago). Trained volunteer Docents from the California State Railroad Museum provide narration aboard Amtrak's California Zephyr in both directions between Sacramento and Reno. This train travels over the original route of America's first Transcontinental Railroad. This narration is offered daily, with some exceptions during busy holiday travel periods.
