Fascinated by railroading history? Interested in working with trains? If you want to learn more about becoming a volunteer, stop by the Stanford Gallery (building next to Museum) and check out the many volunteer opportunities the Museum has to offer. 

Tuesday Train Rides
February 3, 10, 17 & 24

As an expansion of the weekday train ride program for local school groups, the Museum is now offering excursion train rides to the general public on select Tuesdays.  Weekday train ride tickets are only available in person on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10:30 am the day of the train ride at the Sacramento Southern Railroad ticket office.   

Museum Day
Saturday, February 7
Nearly twenty-five local museums will offer free or half-priced admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015, during the 17th Annual Sacramento Museum Day! During the highly anticipated event, most of the nearly 25 museums will offer free admission whereas two destinations located in residential areas — the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town — will offer half-priced admission to offset traffic control and security costs.

Tuesday Train Rides

As an expansion of the weekday train ride program for local school groups, the Museum is now offering excursion train rides to the general public on select Tuesdays.  Weekday train ride tickets are only available in person on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10:30 am the day of the train ride at the Sacramento Southern Railroad ticket office.

Opening Weekend for Excursion Train Rides
Saturday & Sunday, April 4 & 5

11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of authentic locomotives as they roll along the levees of the Sacramento River.  Appealing to all ages, the experience offers guests the chance to experience train travel from an earlier era.

Trains & Tripods
Friday and Saturday, May 1 & 2 
This two-part special "Trains & Tripods" program is designed for amateur photographers interested in understanding more about lighting techniques and also taking advantage of a rare opportunity to photograph amazing locomotives in a closed and controlled environment.

Small Train Holiday
Friday & Saturday November 27 & 28
See a variety of locomotives that pull pretend passengers and scaled-down shipments through all kinds of scenery, whether modeled on real places or created in the imaginations of devoted collectors. You will also get to enjoy Handcar rides, scavenger hunt and more.
