Thursday Night at the Museum
September 3
Tonight is the last night of Thursday Night at the Museum extended hours this summer. The Museum will be open until 8:00 pm.  

All Aboard for Story Time

Museum staff will read a different railroad-related children's story each month and afterward, little ones can enjoy the Museum with their parents.  On September 21, "Good Day" news anchor, Ken Rudulph will read the illustrated children's book The Last Train by Gordon Titcomb.

Volunteer Open House

Fascinated by railroading history? Interested in working with trains? If you want to learn more about becoming a volunteer, stop by the Stanford Gallery (building next to the Museum) and check out the many volunteer opportunities the Museum has to offer.

Special Author Presentation and Book Signing

Voices from the Bottom of the South China Sea is a compelling and illustrated non-fiction book by Robert Wells. Based on lost records that were recently discovered and pieced together by the author, the historical book captures the lives of the Chinese passengers when they spent years laboring in California building the railroad, mining silver, growing food, and seeking their fortune.  Click for more information about the book

Farm-to-Fork Cocktail Train Ride
Sunday, September 27

As part of Farm-to-Fork week, experience what First Class wsa like during the early decades of the 20th century.  Enjoy locally prepared appetizers and beverages prepared by renowned Chef Jay Veregge from Ten22. 

Ales on the Rails
Friday, October 2
6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
This wonderful fundraising event aims to highlight some of the area’s most exciting restaurants and breweries against the historic backdrop of the California State Railroad Museum. The roundhouse venue will offer a unique indoor/outdoor tasting experience, live music, and silent auction set alongside remarkable vintage full-size cars and locomotives.  *Note - There is no train ride.  This event will be inside the Museum's Roundhouse and outside around the turntable.

Tuesday Train Rides
October 6, 13, 20 & 27
11 am & 1 pm
As an expansion of the weekday train ride program for local school groups, the Museum is now offering excursion train rides to the general public on select Tuesdays. Weekday train ride tickets are only available in person on a first-come, first-served basis at 10:30 a.m. the day of the train ride at the Sacramento Southern Railroad ticket office.

Spookomotive Train Rides
October 17 & 18; 24 & 25; 31 & November 1
11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
This delightful, not frightful train is just the ticket for the family.  Ride the train along the levees of the river and listen to a whimsical Halloween story while the "skeleton" crew passes out a special toy treat for each child. Trains depart very hour from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

See a variety of locomotives that pull pretend passengers and scaled-down shipments through all kinds of scenery, whether modeled on real places or created in the imaginations of devoted collectors. You will also get to enjoy Handcar rides, scavenger hunt and more.
